the past in the persent perfect
The past is a totality that we understand. We have nostalgia towards
the past. Or, rather, the call of the past that is the nostalgia
befalls to us, because the past is total. Take, for example, a lover
of the past: we know every quarrel we have made with the no-more-
existing, we recall, with exactitude, every inch of his or her skin,
his or her breath in the morning before waking up, and the paths
that we have trodden together. The past is total: we have everything
in it. Every event that has been passed in the past is forever
engraven in the present perfect — yes, indeed, the past is perfect.
One hardly needs any effort, for a retrospection, to be immersed in
the warmth of the light that comes — or rather has been always coming –
from the past. It is so fascinating that one forgets his or her ethical
responsibility for his or her own being in the present, and his or her
terrified inability in the face of the Unknown, which is the future.
