‘On 26 September, 56 percent of the Swiss electorate voted in favour of extending the EU/Swiss agreement on the free movement of workers to the ten new EU Member States. “The government is very pleased with the result,” said Swiss President Samuel Schmid. “Today’s vote is extremely important, namely for economic growth and the protection of workers.” In a written statement, Commission President José Manuel Barroso said the extension of the 1999 accord on the free movement of people is an “indispensable element” of Swiss-EU relations and will complement Switzerland’s association to the Schengen border agreement approved by the Swiss in a separate referendum in June.’
