The BigMac(BookPro) Index

In the spirit of The Economist‘s BigMac Index, here is what I’ve called the “BigMac(BookPro) Index”.

Price is quoted from Apple Store around the world (VAT included). Currency is converted using google. GDP per capita from CIA’s World Factbook (2005) after PPP (purchasing power parity) adjustment.

Doesn’t quite make sense. Why is the index similar b/n China and HK? Given the big differential in Per Capita GDP b/n the two regions, shouldn’t the index be different also?

    ciprol,

If you were referring to the Economist\’s BigMac Index (in which HK and CN\’s values are -50.8% and -58.7% respectively), it means that HK dollar is at least 50.8% undervalued and CN 58.7%, under the assumption that one should pay the same nominal US dollar price for a Big Mac. That is really a rough measure of purchasing power parity and has its limitations.

Still, here is the question: what if HKD and RMB becomes, say, 10%, 20% stronger than they are now?

    Deny,

    SEAL,
